How to Make the Most of Your Vet Visit

Visiting the vet is not always for when your furry friend is unwell. A vet consultation is an essential part of keeping them happy and healthy. No matter if it’s a routine pet health check or a follow up for a specific condition or issues, knowing how to make the most of your vet visit ensures that your pet is getting the best care and also that you leave the practice feeling informed and understood.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR VET VISIT

Keep reading to learn how to make the most of your vet visit, including questions to ask your vet during your next consultation.

Prepare in Advance

Going into a vet consultation feeling unprepared can leave you feeling flustered and mean that you don’t get out of it what you want. Before your appointment, it is good to note down any concerns or symptoms in your pet that you have noticed. This can include things such as:

  • Have they been eating more or less?
  • Have they been drinking more water?
  • Have they been sleeping more than usual?

It’s also important to know or even bring:

  • A list of any medications or supplements your pet is currently taking
  • Notes on any changes in behaviour or routine

If you’d like to discuss your pet’s nutrition, you can bring a photo of their food and its packaging.

Finally, if your pet has had treatment elsewhere or if you’re a new client at our practice in Kensington, it is a good idea to bring your furry friend’s medical history with you.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask Questions

It can be easy to feel overwhelmed when taking your pet, especially in circumstances when your pet is unwell. However, asking questions is key to understanding your pet’s health and the care or treatment that they are receiving. At our practice in Kensington, we want all owners to feel comfortable, so we welcome any questions as gaining a better understanding of your pet’s health also helps to put any worries or concerns at ease.

If you are unsure of the types of questions to ask your vet during your consultation, here are some helpful prompts:

  • Is my pet a healthy weight?
  • Should I be concerned about this (lump, behaviour, symptom)?
  • Is there anything I should be doing at home to support my pet’s health?
  • Are there any dietary changes that I should consider?
  • When should we schedule the next check-up?

Take Notes

It can be difficult to take in and remember everything discussed in your vet visit especially if you are discussing treatment options, medications. Don’t hesitate to take notes during your consultation such as the key points discussed, dosage instructions or next steps for your furry friend.

Speak up if You Are Unsure

At our practice, we want you to leave your vet consultation feeling informed about the current situation confident with the next steps for your pet and their health. Throughout the consultation, if there’s anything you don’t understand such as a diagnosis, a treatment option, or the name of a condition, don’t hesitate to ask us! We’re here to support you too, so together we can ensure the best for your pet’s wellbeing.

Knowing what to ask during a vet consultation can make a big difference in how informed and reassured you feel. By coming prepared and being curious, you will not only make the most of your vet visit, but also play an active role in your pet’s ongoing care.

So next time you are heading into our practice in Kensington for an appointment, take some time to prepare and don’t forget to bring your list of questions to ask your vet.
