Our New Test for Cancer in Dogs

Did you know that cancer is the most common cause of death in dogs over the age of two years? Which is why our practice in Kensington is now offering the Nu.Q Cancer Test for dogs.

NEW CANCER TEST FOR DOGS

How to Test for Cancer in Dogs

The Nu.Q test is a simple and affordable blood test for healthy dogs aged 7 and older as well as younger dogs (4 years and older) in breeds with an increased risk of cancer.

The dog cancer blood test looks for high cellular turnover, through an increased concentration of nucleosomes in the blood. Through measuring these nucleosomes, the test can help to identify dogs who may have cancer.

After the blood test, follow up testing procedures such as a biopsy or a scan may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis if there is a suspicion of cancer.

What Kinds of Cancer Can Be Detected?

The blood test can detect cancers such as:

  • Lymphoma: a blood cancer that affects the bone marrow, liver, spleen and lungs. It is the most common type of canine cancer.
  • Hemangiosarcoma: a malignant cancer that can form tumours anywhere in the body but they are most commonly found in the heart or spleen.
  • Histiocytic sarcoma: a cancer that affects your dog’s immune system. It can be found in many parts of the body including bone, joint and lungs.

Overall, the dog cancer blood test is able to detect 76% of systemic cancers and 50% of all researched cancers.

Signs of Cancer to look out for

Cancer in your furry friend can occur in any part of the system of the body, so symptoms can be varied and they can also be common to a large range of diseases especially if you have an older pet. This is why a blood test for cancer is necessary, so contact a member of our practice if you see any of the following signs or symptoms of tumours:

  • A lump on the surface of the skin
  • Consistent digestive issues
  • Limping
  • Loss of appetite
  • A sore that won’t heal
  • Weight loss
  • Tiredness/weakness

The Importance of Early Detection

Just like in humans, early detection of cancer is essential for improving clinical outcomes for your furry friends. Detecting your dog’s cancer early means that diagnosis and treatment can happen quicker which can lead to greater and more effective treatment options. In many cases, cancer in dogs is often treatable and even curable in some circumstances.

If you have concerns about a lump or possible tumour on your pet, please get in touch with our practice to arrange a vet consultation. Or if you have any other questions regarding the blood test for cancer in dogs that we are now offering, a member of the team would be more than happy to assist.
