Since the end of the Brexit transition period on 31st December 2020, UK-issued Pet Travel Scheme passports are no longer valid for entry into the EU; however, you are still able to travel with your pet within the EU.

Requirement for EU Travel

Travelling within the EU post Brexit is still possible as long as your pet is microchipped. Additionally, your pet also needs to have currently valid rabies vaccination administered when the pet is at least 12 weeks old and at least 21 days before your date of travel.

If your pet has both of these, you will then need to book an appointment within 10 days before you travel for our lead veterinarian, Dr Johnny Irish, to issue an Animal Health Certificate (AHC).

“Our lead veterinarian, Dr Johnny Irish can issue an Animal Health Certificate (AHC).”

What is an AHC?

An AHC is a single entry, bilingual document which allows onward travel within the EU for 4 months, with return to the UK within the same period. Currently, you can also return to the UK with a valid PETS passport.

Where can you travel to with an AHC?

The AHC is valid for entry to all countries in the EU; however, the first country that you wish to travel to must be stipulated on the certificate so that it is issued in the correct language.

For travel to countries outside of the EU, the requirements to enter and return can vary widely, and in some cases in order to get a dog or cat passport for them, further documentation, vaccinations or blood testing is necessary.

You can contact DEFRA/APHA, the government department in charge of animal movement, and they can provide information regarding travelling outside of the EU.
