Pet Travel to USA: A Guide for UK Pet Owners

Navigating pet travel rules to the USA can feel overwhelming, but it’s more straightforward than you might think. This guide covers everything you need to know for a smooth journey including legal requirements for dogs and cats, necessary documents and what to expect on arrival. With the right preparation, your pet’s travel will be simple and stress-free.

PET TRAVEL TO USA

What are the legal requirements for pet travel to the USA?

The requirements for pet travel to the USA differ for dogs and cats. The good news for UK owners is that the UK is classed as a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, which simplifies the process considerably.

Requirements for dogs

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sets the rules for bringing dogs into the USA. For dogs arriving from the UK, you’ll need to meet four core requirements:

  • Age: The dog must be at least six months old at the time of entry.
  • Microchip: The dog must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner.
  • Valid Rabies Vaccination: Dogs must have a valid rabies vaccination within 30 days of arrival (most pet owners opt to do this before they leave).
  • Health: The dog must appear healthy on arrival.
  • CDC Dog Import Form: A completed form is required

Requirements for cats

The rules for cats are far more relaxed. Cats are not legally required to show proof of rabies vaccination to enter the USA, though the CDC recommends it. Cats must simply appear healthy on arrival and may be subject to inspection at the port of entry.

Individual US states and airlines can set their own additional requirements, such as a fit-to-fly letter. So make sure that you always check the specific rules for your destination and carrier before you travel.

What documentation do you need to travel with a pet to the USA?

When you get your paperwork right, the rest falls into place. Here’s exactly what to prepare when you travel with a pet to the USA.

The CDC Dog Import Form

For dogs, the CDC Dog Import Form is the only document you need. Here’s how it works:

  • Complete it online. A receipt is emailed to you on submission.
  • Keep the receipt handy. You can print it or show it on your phone to customs officials and airlines.
  • It’s free. There’s no cost to submit the form.
  • One form per dog. Each dog travelling needs its own form.
  • It’s valid for six months. The receipt can be used for multiple entries, provided your dog hasn’t visited a high-risk country.

You can complete the form on the day of travel, but we would recommend doing it a few days beforehand so it is one less thing to worry about.

Microchip documentation

Make sure your dog is microchipped and keep the records to hand. This is essential for identification at the border.

Vaccination documentation

Keep your vaccination certificate or vaccination card to hand, for verification when you land in the US.

What happens when you arrive in the US?

Landing with your pet is usually a smooth experience, provided your preparation is in order.

Dogs from rabies-free or low-risk countries, including the UK, can arrive at any US airport, seaport, or land border crossing.

On arrival, your pet must appear healthy and may be subject to inspection at the port of entry. If your paperwork is complete and your pet is healthy, microchipped and vaccinated, you can expect the process to be straightforward.

To speed things along, keep your CDC Dog Import Form receipt and microchip details easily accessible.

Another important thing to note is that if you’re returning to the UK with your dog, they must have a rabies vaccine at least 21 days before re-entry.
