The requirements for pet travel to the USA differ for dogs and cats. The good news for UK owners is that the UK is classed as a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, which simplifies the process considerably.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sets the rules for bringing dogs into the USA. For dogs arriving from the UK, you’ll need to meet four core requirements:
The rules for cats are far more relaxed. Cats are not legally required to show proof of rabies vaccination to enter the USA, though the CDC recommends it. Cats must simply appear healthy on arrival and may be subject to inspection at the port of entry.
Individual US states and airlines can set their own additional requirements, such as a fit-to-fly letter. So make sure that you always check the specific rules for your destination and carrier before you travel.

For dogs, the CDC Dog Import Form is the only document you need. Here’s how it works:
You can complete the form on the day of travel, but we would recommend doing it a few days beforehand so it is one less thing to worry about.
Make sure your dog is microchipped and keep the records to hand. This is essential for identification at the border.
Keep your vaccination certificate or vaccination card to hand, for verification when you land in the US.
